August 31, 2005 The first official day of departure for me
This adventure begins leaving Oakland going to Atlanta at 10:00 PM. I was wanting to go to direct to JFK, but trying to save a few bucks I took the red-eye flight. I was really hesitant because there was a hurricane coming in, which comes to find out caused the biggest damage ever. It dissipated the 31st of August and that was when I was flying in to Atlanta. I was worried, but to my surprise the flight went smooth as can be planned. From Atlanta I had just enough time to catch my connecting flight to JFK. I was at the airport all day and it was rather boring but I was able to use my phone card and call home and see how things were going there. I then boarded the flight for Vienna Austria later on in the evening. I was surprised that I didn't see any of the fellow students at the airport, but we ran into each other very fast after wards on the flight. I remember heading over to Austria on Austrian Air, that I had asked for a root-beer and the hostess had no idea what I was talking about. She brought me a beer and said here you go and tried to have me pay for it. I found out very fast that she was thinking I drank alcohol while I was wanting a nice chilled root beer, a very refreshing drink for me! Well we got very frustrated with each other. It made for an interesting trip! Come to find out that I was on the same flight as several of the participants. There were Andrew Warren, Kelsy, Amanda LeSeuer, James Tippets, Melanie Chamberlain (my roommate's cousin), and Betsy. I had no idea that this would be the first and last day that we would all hang out.
We roamed Vienna for about 6 hours before our connecting flight to Rome would leave. Amanda was the only one who wanted to use her debit card and get Euro from the ATM, so we bummed money off of her. We were able to stroll the streets and take in the local scenery! It was pretty funny to be back in Europe after so many years of being in America. I was in Italy as a missionary from May 3, 2000-March 1, 2002 (I actually entered the Missionary Training Center March 1, 2000). Vienna seemed very different than I would have imagined. I liked the old feeling I got from it and the very Mozart'ish feel to it as well!
